Melanie began higher education studying History of Art at the Courtauld Institute (BA Hons. 1990-3; MA 1994-5) developing a contextual awareness that has been invaluable to her Fine Art practice. While teaching Art and History of Art at Cheltenham College (1995-2000) she gained the MA in Painting at Cheltenham School of Art (1996-8). This introduced her to more recent art theory, and the rigour of exposure, assessment and feedback. From here she worked as Artist in Residence in three different posts, moving from Cheltenham to Devon (2000-1) to London (2001-present). She has since exhibited in group and solo shows widely across London including: at the Florence Trust N5, Arc Marketing W14, Seven Bedford Row WCR, Thompson's City Gallery EC2, Lexicon Partners EC4, twist art&design SW6, Sarah Myerscough Fine Art W1, and at the Jerwood Space SE1 where her work was highly commended. Her work is also in corporate and private collections, in the UK and overseas.
Melanie now works from her home in London that she shares with her husband and children. She has pared down the techniques she had been using to a visual language where line and the role of drawing have become essential. She continues to explore the potential of painting to draw attention to something that generally might be overlooked. Melanie also works to commission.
